USAV Boys’ Junior Nationals by the Numbers

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (July 3, 2011) – It has been a numbers game at the 2011 USA Volleyball (USAV) Boys’ Junior National Championships (BJNC), taking place June 29 to July 6 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, from the number of points to the number of volleyball hours clocked by the athletes, coaches, fans and staff.

Below is a list of numbers that are crucial in the equation that make up the 32nd annual USAV BJNC.

1 - There is one USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships each year and all of the matches are held under one roof, this year at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

2 - A total of two teams from Guam traveled to compete at the championships.

3 - Three Canadian teams ventured south to cross the country borders for a chance to take home the gold.

4 - A total of four finance & ticket staff members worked at the front ticket booth, selling passes to friends, family and fans throughout the 10-day tournament. June Sander, USAV manager of finance and corporate operations, is joined by Britney Burns, Thang Nguyen and Nora Smith.

8 - No matter what the need was, the eight members of the Equipment Crew were there to fix any problems. On this committee are Richard Bleau, chair, Steve DiBacco, Shaun Dryden, Mike Gibbs, Kyle Homeyer, Phil Peterson, Cameron Sitler and Mike Townsend.

9 - Led by USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships Event Director Barbara Eisenbeis, nine members made up the Championship Event Staff. Throughout the tournament they were located at the Championship desk in the heart of the convention center.

12 - Covering seven age groups, 12 divisions competed for their respected medals. Of the 12 divisions, five were Open and seven were Club.

15 - There are 15 over-sized courts, these replicate those courts that international teams are used to.

32 - Puerto Rico showed up in huge numbers bringing in 32 teams.

34 - Texas Star Photo brought in 34 computers to display the action shots taken of athletes on every day of competition.

35 - The Minneapolis Convention Center provided ample space for the 35 courts that were used at during the eight-day span.

36 - A total of 36 medals were given out, 12 each of gold, medal and silver.

38 - 38 different volleyball regions were represented by 125 referees officiating the BJNC matches.

58 - The official ball of the 2011 USAV BJNC is the Molten “Pro Touch” V58

87 - A total of 87 pools were formed at the beginning of the tournament.

95 - Throughout the medal matches, music was seeping out of the speakers surrounding the championship court. A total of 95 songs were set up on the BJNC playlist only to grow as requests from the teams began to trickle in.

125 - Wearing white polos with an “Official Referee” badge on the left side, 125 referees kept the tournament running smoothly with the enforcement of rules and regulations.

130 - There were 130 clubs represented by the 392 teams that qualified for the BJNC.

150 - A total of 150 elite athletes were named to the All-Tournament Team in their respective age and division. The seven members that made up the all-tournament committee selected the 10 All-Tournament Teams. 

152 - There is an estimated 152 hours of volleyball to be played under the Minneapolis Convention Center over the course of eight regulated days of competition.

185 - USA Volleyball has 185 Molten “Pro Touch” V58 volleyballs for the tournament. Teams had the opportunity to sign out balls and ball carts, saving them precious travel space in their trains, planes and automobiles.

350 - The medical staff estimates that 350 rolls of medical tape will be used over the eight-day period. 

392 - The 32nd edition of the USAV BJNC welcomed 392 teams from two countries and three independent provinces/territories of the United States.

4000 - Athletes came in huge numbers, topping 4,000 registered at the BJNC.

4,992 - There are 4,992 Sport Court tiles on the 19 regular sized courts.

5,408 - There are 5,408 Sport Court tiles making up the 15 over-sized courts.

6,000+ - There has been over 6,000 sub sandwiches consumed by the tournament attendees.

6,100 - USA Volleyball had 6,100 Mizuno lanyards shipped in for players, coaches, team staff,  recruiters and event staff.

6,240- To create the Championship court, 6,240 tiles of Sport Court were used.

7,056.7 - The teams from Guam traveled an average of 7,056.7 miles to partake in the tournament.

12,000 - An estimated crowd of 12,000 will attend over the course of the tournament.

21,000 - A total of 21,000 hotel room nights were booked for the USAV BJNC.

182,208 - Covering the concrete floor of the Minneapolis Convention are 182,208 Sport Court tiles. The red and blue puzzle pieces making up the courts will be taken apart and used for gifts after photos have been printed on them.
