IDQ Champions Crowned at Dockweiler Beach

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 12, 2011) – Emily Day and Heather Hughes took the women’s title while Avery Drost and Steven Vanderwerp won the men’s title at the USA Volleyball international development qualifier (IDQ) on June 10 at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey, Calif.

Teams enter the IDQs to compete for prize money, USAV Beach National Ranking points and bids to upcoming NORCECA Beach Circuit events.

Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) defeated Sarah Day (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Saralyn Smith (Huntington Beach, Calif.) in the women’s final, 21-15, 21-23, 15-12.

In the semifinals, Day and Hughes defeated the 2010 FIVB Junior World Championship team of Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.), 22-20, 21-16.

Ross and Roenicke took third place by defeating top-seeded Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and Heather Lowe (Cypress, Calif.), 21-12, 22-20.

On the men’s side Drost (Santa Monica, Calif.)  and Vanderwerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) captured first place by defeating top-seeded Jesse Rambis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) in the final, 21-18, 17-21, 17-15.

Drost and Vanderwerp made their way to the finals by defeating Mike Maghy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Andrew Northness (Arroyo Grande, Calif.), 21-13, 25-23 in the semifinals.

Matt Heagy (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Tony Pray (Tucson, Ariz.) won third place by defeating Maghy and Northness, 21-17, 19-21, 15-12.
