USAV Holds 2nd Annual Beach HPC in Hermosa Beach

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 20, 2011) – Approximately 125 boys’ and girls’ beach volleyball teams competed at the second annual USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Championships (HPC) on July 14-17 in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
The Beach HPC gave its participants exposure to international style competition within five separate age divisions. FIVB rules and match format were used to simulate international competition.
The Gold Division winning teams in the U15, U17 and U19 age groups will be invited to a USA Volleyball Beach Holiday High Performance Camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Gold Division Champion Teams in the U26 group will represent the United States in the NORCECA Beach Circuit event on Sep. 21-25 in San Diego, Calif.
In the Women’s U26 Division, Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga, Calif.) and Kaitlin Sather (Santa Rosa, Calif.) captured first. Mbebui Chafeh (Fontana, Calif.) and Geeana Urango (Los Alamitos, Calif.) came in second place. Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Heather Hughes (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) finished in third.
Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Adam Cabbage (Albequerque, New Mexico) captured first place in the Men’s U26 Division. Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Claif.) and Steven VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) took second. Joseph Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Mark VanZwieten (Pomparo Beack, Fla.) finished in third.
Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Rebecca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif.) came in first place in the Women’s U21 Division. Aly Squires (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Betsi Metter (Los Angeles, Calif.) placed second. Bree Scarborough (Sarasota, Fla.) and Jeassica McGregor (Groveland, Fla.) won third.
In the Men’s U21 Division, Brandon Fuimaona (Westminster, Calif.) and David VanderMeer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won first. Kyle Stevenson (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Harrison Phelps (Laguna Beach, Calif.) finished second. Ian Satterfield (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Jordon Dyer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) placed third.
In the Girls’ U15 Gold Division, Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Julia Lewkowicz (Coral Springs, Fla.) captured first place. The Phoenix, Ariz., team of Jordan Anderson and Victoria Svornic placed second. Maxine Burke (Dana Point, Calif.) and Georgina Hernandez (San Juan Capistrano, Calif., took third place.
Tiyanna Cooper (Peoria, Ariz.) and Mia Merino (Tustin, Calif.) won first place in the Girls’ U15 Silver Division. Marisa Ramsey (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Lily Dyer (San Clemente, Calif.) took second place. Jessica Daniels (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Makeanna Martin (Gilbert, Ariz.) placed third.
In the Girls’ U17 Gold Division, Ciana Wagner (Encinitas, Calif.) and Lacey Knuttila (San Diego, Calif.) captured first. The Phoenix, Ariz., team of Alexis Patterson and Danielle Westfall took second place. Susannah Muno (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and London Chow (Palm Springs, Calif.) finished third.
In the Girls’ U-17 Silver Division, Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif.) and Annie Tice (Sandy, Utah) finished in first place. Brittany Pelliteri (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) and Haley Mitchell (Jupiter, Fla.) came in second. The Washougal, Wash., team of Sopie and Emma Peel took third place.
Justine Wong-Orantes (Cypress, Calif.) and Sara Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif.) captured first in the Girls’ U-19 Gold Division. The Colleyville, Texas team of Sydney and Kiersten Braasch won second place. Kamila Tan (San Diego, Calif.) and Jansen Button (Menifee, Calif.) placed third.
In the Girls’ U-19 Silver Division, the Deerfield Beach, Fla., team of Kristina Pelliteri and Savannah Davis took first place. The Geneva, Fla., team of Julie Brown and Kayla Joyce placed second. The Camarillo, Calif. team of Danielle Helland and Michelle Volosin finished in third place.
In the Boys’ U-15 Division, the Moraga, Calif., team of Joseph and Gage Worsley placed first. The San Clemente, Calif., team of Noah Dyer and Jordan Fitzgerald finished second. Trevor Liu and Kyle Jasuta (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) came in third place.
The Boys’ U-17 Division first place winners were Torey DeFalco (Menifee, Calif.) and Mitchell Decker (Parker, Colo.). Ryne Benson (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) and Carson Flood (Glendale, Ariz.) finished second. Teddy Hesterman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Nathan Vandeer Meer (Grand Rapid, Mich.) placed third.
Skyler McCoy (Lakewood, Calif.) and Spencer Buckley (Coto de Caza, Calf.) came in first place in the Boys’ U-19 Gold Division. Chris Long (Tustin, Calif.) and Eric Ensing (Valencia, Calif.) finished in second place. Matthew Butler (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Riley Maleon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) took third.
In the Boys’ U-19 Silver Division, Justin Vogel (Odessa, Fla.) and Matthew Clayton (Jupiter, Fla.) captured first place. Garret Bourg (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Neal Sorensen (Jupiter, Fla.) won second. Dane Hunsicker (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Andrew VanZwieten (Pomparo Beach, Fla.) took third place.
Entry to Beach HPC was by nomination only. Teams were nominated by one of four methods. All members of USA Volleyball Beach National Training Teams are required to participate. All members of USA Beach Volleyball Youth and Junior High Performance East Teams and all Select and Future Select High Performance Teams are invited, but not required to participate. A wild-card invitation is extended by the national office to select athletes who attended a Beach High Performance Tryout. Finally, a regional bid is also extended by regions to members of regional beach HP programs. Each region may nominate two teams per age group, per gender. Regions who hosted USA Volleyball Beach HP tryouts in 2011 may nominate three teams per age group, per gender. Individuals who are interested in receiving a bid should contact their region for nomination.
