U.S. Men's Jr. National Team Onto the Next One

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 3, 2011) - The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team won Pool A of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Junior World Championship Brazil 2011 after defeating Japan in four sets on Wednesday and Brazil was forced to a fifth set against Bulgaria.
Team USA, which earned six group points in the first round with its victories over Bulgaria and Japan, holds a 2-1 record as it enters the top eight second round which will be played from Aug. 5-7. The U.S. will continue to compete in Rio de Janeiro and is still in the running to win the gold medal.
The Americans will play in Pool E along with Iran, Spain and Russia in the second round. Team USA’s first match of the second round will be against Iran (second-place Pool D) at noon PT on Friday. On Saturday, the U.S. will face Spain (second-place Pool B) at noon PT. To conclude group action on Sunday, Team USA will face Russia (first-place Pool C) at noon PT.
The group points and won-lost records obtained in the first round are wiped clean for the second round. The top two teams from Pool E and Pool F (Argentina, Brazil, India, Serbia) will advance to the gold-medal semifinals on Aug. 9, while other classification semifinals take place on the same day. The medal matches and playoffs will conclude tournament play on Aug 10.
At the most recent FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship held in 2009 at Pune, India, the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team finished eighth in the tournament and is assured of at least having the same finish in 2011.
