U.S. to Open FIVB Girls' Youth Worlds vs Puerto Rico

The U.S. Girls' Youth National Team traveled to Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday for the FIVB Girls' Youth World Championships.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 11, 2011) - After 23-straight days of competition, training and traveling, the 2011 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team will take the court Friday in Ankara, Turkey, at 5 a.m. PT in its first match at the FIVB Volleyball Girls' Youth World Championship Turkey 2011 slated for Aug. 12-21.

The 12-player roster will compete in Pool C with Puerto Rico, China and Serbia. In Pool A, host country Turkey will face Poland, Algeria and Egypt. Brazil, the 11-time World Champions, will headline Pool B with Slovakia, Argentina and Mexico, while Pool D houses Italy, Thailand, Germany and Japan.

The U.S. will take on NORCECA rivals, Puerto Rico in its first match on Friday before battling Serbia at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday and China on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The GYNT is under the direction of head coach Jim Stone and assistant coaches Melissa Wolter and Charlene Whitted. Joining the team on the trip will be team manager Heath Hoke, team doctor Priscilla Tu and technical coordinator Herb Summers.

At the completion of winning gold at the USAV High Performance Championships, the team continued its training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., before heading to Turkey.
