COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 19, 2011) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Emily Day and Heather Hughes won the silver medal on Friday at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

It is the first beach volleyball medal ever for the United States at the World University Games.

Day (Torrance, Calif./Loyola Marymount) and Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif./Loyola Marymount) made it to the gold medal match, where they fell to Germany’s Karla Borger and Britta Buethe, 21-19, 21-14.

It was the second time Day and Hughes had faced the Germany team. On Wednesday, Day and Hughes defeated Borger and Buethe in the third round, 21-14, 17-21, 17-15. In June, Borger and Buethe won an FIVB Challenger event in Seoul, South Korea in which Day and Hughes placed fourth. However, the two teams never played each other in the tournament.

Day and Hughes advanced to Friday’ s final by defeating China’s Jin Jieqiong and Miao Chenchen in Friday’s semifinals, 18-21, 21-19, 15-10.

Brazil’s Elize Secomana and Agatha Bednarczur won the bronze medal with a 20-22, 21-15, 15-13 win over Jieqiong and Chenchen.
