COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 6, 2011) – The U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team has amassed a 4-0 record after two days at the ECVD Continental Cup in Yevpatoriya, Ukraine.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Women defeated Slovenia in their morning match, 25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 25-27, 16-14. They had an easier time in their evening match as they beat Brazil, 25-13, 27-25, 25-4.
Katie Holloway (Lake Stevens, Wash./UCO Resident Athlete) led all scorers against Slovenia, finishing with 21 points on a match-high 15 kills (40.5 kill percent) and a match-high six blocks. Brenda Maymon (Sellersburg, Ind.) added 12 points on eight kills (42.1 kill percent), one block and three aces.
“We didn't play our best against Slovenia but were able to squeak out a win,” U.S. Assistant Coach Cara Lang (Sartell, Minn.) said via e-mail. “After we dropped sets three and four, Slovenia forced us to play; so we had to regroup with a come-from-behind win in the fifth set. Slovenia was up 14-11 in the fifth set and we were able to work back to take the match.”
As a team, the United States out-hit Slovenia 44-26 and completed 38.3 percent of their attack attempts. The U.S. Women out-blocked Slovenia 15-4 and had 13 aces while Slovenia had nine.
Among other U.S. scorers, Nichole Millage (Champaign, Ill./UCO Resident Athlete) totaled 11 points on six kills and a match-high five aces. Monique Burkland (Ardmore, Okla./UCO Resident Athlete) added 11 points on four attacks (44.4 kill percent), three blocks and four aces.
Michelle Gerlosky (Lake Wales, Fla.) scored 10 points on four attacks, five blocks and one ace. Heather Erickson (Fayetteville, N.C./UCO Resident Athlete) totaled seven points on seven kills. U.S. libero Kari Miller (Washington, D.C.) led both teams with 28 receptions.
The United States’ second match against Brazil saw a much more dominant U.S. performance.
“Brazil was an ebb-and-flow match with a strong start for us in the first set,” Lang said. “Brazil came back with some quicker plays in the second set and pushed us.
“The girls decided they wanted to finish this day off on the right note and completed the match in the third set, 15-4. The scores at the technical timeouts were 8-0 and 16-2.”
Holloway again led all scorers with 17 points on a match-high 14 attacks (50.0 kill percent), two blocks and one ace.
The U.S. led Brazil in kills, 56-46 (48.2 kill percent). It also led in blocks, 15-4 and in aces, 13-9.
“We wanted to force our outsides to get the job done in this match and it proved successful with Katie and Heather,” Lang said.
Erickson finished with seven points on five kills and two aces. Gerlosky added seven points on two kills, one block and a match-high four aces. Maymon scored five points on four kills and one ace. Millage totaled five points on two attacks and a match-high three blocks.
Burkland finished with two points on one block and one ace. At libero, Miller led her team with 13 receptions.
The U.S. is scheduled to play just one match on Wednesday against Netherlands.
