COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 8, 2011) - The U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team remained undefeated after its dominating win on Thursday over Great Britain 25-9, 25-13, 25-15 at the ECVD Continental Cup in Yevpatoriya, Ukraine.

The U.S. Women leapt to a 6-0 record and a first-place finish in pool play to advance into Friday’s semifinal round.

It was the United States on top throughout the match with the team overpowering Great Britain with 30-14 attacks, completing 62 percent compared to 37 percent as well as delivering 17 aces compared to Great Britain’s one.

“We moved well and were able to stay on top the whole match,” U.S. Assistant Coach Cara Lang (Sartell, Minn.) said via e-mail. “They have played hard and have been grounded mentally to capitalize on their strengths in every match.”

Brenda Maymon (Sellersburg, Ind.) led the team with 12 points off of three service aces, eight kills and a block while Team Captain Katie Holloway (Lake Stevens, Wash./UCO Resident Athlete) charted two blocks, eight kills in addition to a service ace for 11 points. Leading the team in aces was Michelle Gerlosky (Lake Wales, Fla.) with six. She tallied eight total points in the match.

Heather Erickson (Fayetteville, N.C./UCO Resident Athlete) contributed eight points to the team with three service aces and five kills while Nichole Millage (Champaign, Ill./UCO Resident Athlete) also had eight points off of two service aces, five kills and a single block. Monique Burkland (Ardmore, Okla./UCO Resident Athlete) posted four points off of a pair of aces and a pair of kills.

“We finished first in our pool and have advanced to the semifinal round along with Ukraine, Russia, and Slovenia,” Lang said. “Needless to say, we are very proud of how the girls have handled this event so far, being outmatched physically against teams who are playing with so many minimally disabled or able-bodied personnel.”
