COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 17, 2011) – The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, currently training in Anaheim, Calif., in preparation for the FIVB World Cup as the first 2012 Olympic Games qualification tournament, will hold a Red versus Blue intrasquad scrimmage on Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time at Irvine Valley College.
Admission will be $5 and tickets are available at the door only. Athletes competing in the Red versus Blue intrasquad scrimmage will be those on the Team USA preliminary roster for the World Cup.
The U.S. Women, ranked second in the world by the FIVB, will compete in four cities throughout Japan during the FIVB World Cup held Nov. 4-18. The top three teams in the 12-team World Cup field will earn berths into the 2012 Olympic Games. The only country to have secured a spot in the 2012 Olympic Games is the host England.
The FIVB World Cup is held in the year preceding the Summer Olympic Games and has become the initial qualification tournament into the Olympic Games. At the most recent event in 2007, the U.S. Women finished third in the FIVB World Cup to secure a berth into the 2008 Olympic Games. Team USA went on to earn the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.
The U.S. Women are 28-7 in 2011 counting two victories in the Pan American Games that is in progress through Oct. 20. Team USA has gold-medal finishes at the prestigious FIVB World Grand Prix and the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship during the current calendar year.
