U.S. Ranks in Top Six of FIVB Youth/Junior Rankings

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 22, 2012) – The USA Volleyball High Performance program ranks third in the female division and tied for sixth in the male category in the recently released International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) junior and youth combined world rankings per gender.
The U.S. trails only China and Brazil in the FIVB Female Junior and Youth World Ranking after finishing fourth at the 2011 FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship and ninth at the 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship. Further, the two female programs carry over points from silver medal performance at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and gold-medal performances at the 2010 NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship and the 2010 NORCECA Women’s Junior World Championship. On the men’s side of the youth and junior FIVB ranking, the U.S. earned points by finishing fourth at the 2011 FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship and 15th at the 2011 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship. Additional points have carried over from its gold-medal performance in the 2010 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship and a second-place finish at the 2010 NORCECA Boys’ Youth Continental Championship. In the world ranking, the U.S. youth/junior men trail only No. 1 Serbia, No. 2 Argentina, No. 3 Russia, No. Cuba and No. 5 Spain. The U.S. is tied in the world ranking with Brazil. Only the United States, Serbia and Brazil are ranked among the top six in both the male and female youth and junior world rankings.
The FIVB ranking includes finishes obtained in its youth and junior world championships (50 percent reduction the second year), the youth and junior continental championships (50 percent reduction the second year) and the Youth Olympic Games (25 percent each year).
