COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 9, 2009) - Cassie Loessberg (Sacramento, Calif.), a heralded libero and captain for the University of Miami women's volleyball team, leads two distinct lives that she must be committed 100 percent.
Loessberg is the school record-holder in career digs with 1,704, and with 15 matches remaining in her senior season, could finish among the top five all-time on the Atlantic Coast Conference all-time dig list. She also holds school records for digs in a three-, four- and five-set match.
However, the Hurricane volleyball team is only one aspect of Loessberg's life. She currently holds the rank of E-3 Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps reserves, which was a career calling as long as she can remember. During the volleyball offseason, she travels 200 miles to Orlando one weekend a month to serve as a motor transport operator with the Marine Corps.
According to Loessberg, she came back from recruit training with skills that helped on the volleyball court, including leadership skills, staying mentally sharp and finding motivation within herself each and every day.
Once her Hurricane volleyball career is over this year and she graduates from Miami next May with a degree in criminology, Loessberg intends to enroll in Officer Candidate School with the hopes of becoming a fighter pilot.
Prior to attending Miami, Loessberg played club volleyball for Team Force. Her club finished second at the 2004 USA Junior Olympic Girls' Volleyball Championships and she was named to the all-tournament team. Two years later, Loessberg led Team Force to a top-10 finish at the 2006 USA Junior Olympics Girls' Volleyball Championships in the 18 American Division. During her time with St. Francis High School, her prep squad was ranked 11th in the nation and went on to win a California State Championship.

Semper Fi, from Gunnery Sergeant Joe Aguilar, Referee Chair, Southern California Volleyball Region! There are a lot of retired and active duty referees and players. I am still on active duty and I know that my experience in the Corps has definitely helped my referee career. Good Luck to LCpl Loessberg with all her desires!
