U.S. Men's, Women's Beach Teams Finish WUC on Same Day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 20, 2010) – The 2010 World University Championships ended early for four U.S. beach teams as none advanced to the semifinals of the tournament in Alanya, Turkey.

Both the women’s USA1 team of Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) and the men’s USA1 team of Slick (Andover, Minn.) and Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla.) finished the tournament tied for seventh.

The women’s USA2 team of Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.) and the men’s USA2 team of Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Maddison McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii) both finished tied for 13th.

Ledoux and Machado were eliminated Saturday from the round of 16 when they lost to Day and Moriarty, 21-10, 21-18. Ledoux and Machado finished with a record of 3-2 for the tournament.

Day and Moriarty moved on to defeat Estonia, 21-19, 21-11 and advance to the quarterfinals, where they fell to Brazil2, 21-16, 23-21. Day and Moriarty finished with a record of 5-3.

On the men’s side, Ciarelli and McKibbin were eliminated from the round of 16 by Poland2, 21-17, 21-16. They finished the tournament with a record of 1-4.

Slick and Van Zwieten won their round of 16 match over Turkey1, 2-1 (12-21, 21-12, 19-17). But they fell in the quarterfinals to Brazil2, 21-16, 21-16. They finished the tournament with a record of 5-3.

Teams from Germany went on to win both the men’s and women’s titles.
