Former Assistant Coach - Li Yong
U.S. Women's National Team Assistant Coach (2005-2008)
Li Yong completed his fourth year as assistant coach for the USA women's national team by helping Team USA to a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in his native country. During the course of his four years with the program, he has assisted the team to a 90-49 record.
Li comes to the USA women's national team after serving as the technical instructing coach for Sichuan Physical Sports Skills and Capabilities College in Sichuan Province, China. He held the position from Jan. 2003 until his appointment with USA women's national team in 2005.
Li served as an assistant coach on China's national women's volleyball team from Oct. 1991 to Dec. 1998. He assisted the Chinese to a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta. During his tenure with the team as an assistant coach, China won the World Cup in 1991, the Asian Championships three times and the Asian Games once.
Li assisted Modena Women's Best A Volleyball Club in Italy from Aug. 1999 to May 2002. As an assistant coach, Modena claimed three first-place honors including Italy's Women's Best A League Volleyball Tournament (1999-2000), the Italy Cup (2001) and the European Women's Champion Club League Volleyball Tournament (2001).
Li, born on Jan. 31, 1963, played on the Chengdu Volleyball Club adult team in China from Sept. 1980 to April 1984. His team placed second at the National Grade B League Volleyball Tournament.
Li's playing career shifted to the volleyball club of Sichuan Physical Sports Skills and Capabilities College from April 1984 to Oct. 1991. He helped his team win the National Best A League Volleyball Tournament in 1991 after the squad finished second in 1990.
Li earned a graduation certificate on athletic sports from Sichuan Physical Sports Skills and Capabilities College in July 1996. He was admitted and enrolled in Chengdu Physical Education College in Dec. 2003 to specialize in the undergraduate program for sports training.
