Team Practice Schedule
USA Programs will begin training in Iowa on July 19 with one training session. July 20 - 22, USA Programs will train 5 - 6 hours per day split into 2 sessions and will finish with one training session on both July 23 and 24. The primary focus of the training will be learning USA National Team skill techniques and playing systems. Athletes will receive individual training as well as be trained within the team structure. Midway through training, athletes will be split into tiered teams depending on the athlete's training evaluation. These are the teams on which the athletes will compete during the tournament. More precise training schedules will be distributed in an e-mail approximately one week before the arrival day.
Competition Schedule
This event does not follow a traditional am/pm wave format that you will find at most large junior volleyball tournaments. With few exceptions, each team will play a total of eight 3-out-of-5 set matches over the course of the event. Typically two matches per day during the early rounds. Because of this when a team plays, its matches is quite random from day to day to allow for proper scheduling and recovery time. The competition lasts 4 ½ days, with all finals scheduled to take place on the last day.
Opening Ceremony
This event holds an opening ceremony very similar to the Olympics. All teams up and march into the playing venue promoting the region or country they are from. In the past, teams have worn local clothing, carried flags, and even danced to region specific music. Speakers at the ceremony include USA Volleyball Olympians and local politicians. In most years, a banquet is held in conjunction with a large banquet where athletes, coaches, parents, and even officials join together for a meal.
Additional Information
All oversight of athletes during their stay in Des Moines is taken care of by USA coaches. Parents are not involved with chaperoning, etc. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to come to Des Moines and should plan to come for the US High Performance Championships, July 24 - 28, 2012. The players practice as a group very hard during training so it is best for parents to come during the tournament as there really is not time to visit with your athlete during training. Since the time the athletes have together as a group is very limited, it is important that players have the opportunity to get to know their coaches and their teammates from other parts of the country. Not unlike a USA Volleyball camp, the athletes are responsible to their teams and training groups first and parents should expect to travel to Des Moines to support the teams during the tournament portion.
