Hugh McCutcheon and Fabio Azevedo stand together at the World Congress

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 19, 2024) – The FIVB 39th World Congress in Porto, Portugal, last weekend brought together more than 200 volleyball leaders from across the globe to embark on a new chapter in the sport’s development.

Fabio Azevedo was elected as the new FIVB President, a role he will hold until 2032. Azevedo succeeds Dr. Ary S. Graça F°, who served as president for 12 years and was honored with the title of Honorary President. Under Graça’s stewardship, the FIVB saw tremendous growth and innovation, and Azevedo now aims to build on that legacy.

Azevedo appointed Hugh McCutcheon, a long-time senior advisor to the FIVB, as the new FIVB Secretary General. McCutcheon, who coached both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams to Olympic medals, has been a key figure in the global volleyball community. His leadership in this new role is expected to strengthen the FIVB’s strategic direction.

The FIVB World Congress also appointed several people with ties to the United States to various councils and commissions. These individuals will play critical roles in shaping the future of volleyball worldwide:

  • Jordan Larson — Women’s Volleyball Representative, Athletes’ Commission
  • Misty May-Treanor — Beach Volleyball Commission

  • Peter Diamond — President of the Communication Commission
  • Melissa Weymouth — Game Technology & Innovation Commission
  • Marv Dunphy — Heritage and Legacy Commission
