Players at the Beach U19 World Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 18, 2022) – The U.S. team of Ashley Pater/Myriah Massey won the silver medal on Sunday at the FIVB U19 Beach World Championships in Dikili, Türkiye.

The U.S. team of Sophie Kubiak/Bailey Showalter, who had to win two qualifying matches at the start of the tournament and were seeded 32nd, finished fourth.

In the semifinals, Pater/Massey, who were seeded second, beat Canada’s No. 4 Emma Glagau/Ruby Sorra, 2-1 (27-25, 17-21, 17-15).

In the final, Pater/Massey fell to Ukraine’s No. 3 Yeva Serdiuk/Daria Romaniuk, 2-0 (21-17, 21-18). Pater/Massy did not lose a set until the semifinals.

“Mariah and Ashley are a solid ball-control team and are a tough team to beat because of that,” U.S. Coach Kristen Rohr said. “They played a lot of teams that out-sized and out-powered them. They stayed really stead throughout the whole tournament.”

Kubiak/Showalter lost to Serdiuk/Romaniuk in the semifinals, 2-0 (21-15, 21-14). They fell to Glagau/Sorra in the third-place match,

“To go from playing in the qualifier, making it into the main draw, I thought they played pretty flawlessly throughout the qualifier and the first couple days of main draw,” Rohr said. “The Ukraine team played out of their minds and didn’t make a lot of mistakes. I think Bailey and Sophie have so much to be proud of.”

The U.S. boys team of Ayden Keeter/Tread Rosenthal, seeded 11th, finished tied for 17th after losing Saturday in the Round of 24 to Krystof Jan Oliva/David Westphal of Czech Republic.

“Tread and Ayden played so well in the first two matches against Japan and Argentina,” said coach Guilherme Fiapo. “They were growing during the tournament. They ran into a tough Czech Republic team.”

The Latvian team of Olivers Bulgacs/Davis Teteris that beat the U.S. boys team of Caleb Blanchette/Thomas Hurst in the qualifier and knocked them from the competition went on to win the silver medal.

“Caleb and Thomas played good,” Fiapo said. “They probably needed a little more time to prepare for the competition. Unfortunately, they did not have much time to practice together.
