Gene Chambliss obit

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 1, 2021) USA Volleyball sends its condolences to the family and friends of Gene O. Chambliss of Dale, Texas, who died Jan. 19, 2021 at age 91.

Chambliss served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Women’s Volleyball Team at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. He served as the U.S. Women’s National Team head coach at the NORCECA Championship in Mexico City in 1969.

In 1969, Chambliss won the George J. Fisher Leader In Volleyball Award, which recognizes longtime significant contributions to volleyball programs and activities as a player, coach, official, leader and/or administrator at the local and national levels within the United States for a minimum of 20 years.

As a younger man, Chambliss competed on the All-Air Force Volleyball Team at the USAV Open National Championships.

Later, Chambliss competed at the Opens in the senior age groups and was named Most Valuable Player six times.
