In 2021, USA Volleyball launched the National Team Development Program (NTDP) as the highest level of player development for high-potential volleyball athletes from across the country. The NTDP aims to provide top athletes more opportunities to develop within the USA Volleyball National Team system. It’s an athlete-centered program that prioritizes the health, well-being and overall development of each individual player. Players will have more opportunities to play with and against the best athletes from across the country and learn from some of the best minds in the game.
NTDP is divided into age-group categories, starting with Girls Under-15 and Boys Under-16, with the oldest age groups for both genders being Under-21. NTDP Training Series are held seasonally at various locations across the country for approximately the top 30-40 athletes per birth year. Athletes invited to Training Series programs are in consideration for selection to age-group national teams. In addition, regionalized events called NTDP Accelerators provide athletes nominated by clubs and regions the opportunity to learn with and train against top competition in shorter, more localized training opportunities
Athletes are selected for NTDP Training Series and age-group national teams via the nationwide NTDP Scouting Network. Scouts from around the country have been chosen to identify athletes at qualifiers, bid events and high school/club tournaments across the United States.
In 2022 and 2023, USA Volleyball’s youngest age-group national teams achieved historic international outcomes. Through the NTDP’s Training Series and Accelerator events, high-potential athletes have received training on skills and themes that translate to success in the international game. They also built connections with one another and with top coaches from across the country, including staff from USA Volleyball’s age-group national teams.
The 2022-23 Boys U19 National Team made history by finishing fourth at the 2023 FIVB Boys U19 World Championship, the highest finish ever for the team. Athletes eligible for 2022-23 Girls U19 National Team won their third consecutive medal and second gold out of three World Championships at the 2023 FIVB Girls U19 World Championship, and they later finished sixth at the 2023 FIVB Women’s U21 World Championship, two places higher than the USA’s average historical finish of eighth.
In its first appearance in the FIVB Girls U17 World Championship, the U.S. Girls U17 National Team will be playing for a gold medal after dispatching the 2024 Girls U17 gold medalists China, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-18). The U.S. has not lost a set in the championship in eight matches.
The U.S. Girls U17 National Team swept Italy, 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 26-24) on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the 2026 FIVB Girls U17 World Championship in Czechia in Santiago, Chile.
The U.S. Girls U17 National Team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2026 FIVB Girls U17 World Championship with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-15) win over Argentina in the Round of 16 on Wednesday night in Czechia in Santiago, Chile.
The U.S. Girls U17 National Team completed pool play with a 5-0 record, completing its preliminary round sweep with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-17) victory over Czechia in Santiago, Chile on Tuesday. The U.S. has not dropped a set in the tournament.
The U.S. Girls U17 National Team won its fourth match in a row at the 2026 FIVB Girls U17 World Championship with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-16) win over Thailand on Monday in Santiago, Chile.
