Former Men's National Team Head Coach
John Speraw is the CEO & President of USA Volleyball, the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport in the United States. As CEO, Speraw is responsible for leading the organization’s mission to foster a safe, inclusive, and positive volleyball experience for all participants while leading USA Volleyball’s national teams toward the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Recognized as one of the most respected names in volleyball history, Speraw brings decades of elite championship leadership to the executive role. Prior to becoming CEO, Speraw served as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team from 2013 to 2024, where he led the team to bronze medals at the 2016 and 2024 Olympic Games. In addition to earning 24 international medals throughout his USA Volleyball coaching career, Speraw was a driving force behind five NCAA national championships, three at UC Irvine and two at UCLA, cementing his place as a top-tier collegiate head coach. He remains the only individual in men’s volleyball history to win an NCAA Championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
Speraw is a three-time National Coach of the Year, including 2023 AVCA National Coach of the Year honors. His career accolades include the 2018 Southern California Indoor Volleyball Association Hall of Fame inductee, being named the 2007 United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year for Volleyball, a two-time Volleyball Magazine National Coach of the Year, and recipient of the 2008 Ethics in America Pillar Award in Sports and Entertainment. A former standout student-athlete and NCAA All-Tournament selection, Speraw was recently inducted into the Arcadia High School Hall of Fame after leading his high school volleyball team to a CIF Championship.
In 2016, Speraw co-founded the First Point Volleyball Foundation to expand opportunities for young athletes. In May 2025, First Point merged with the USA Volleyball Foundation, establishing a dedicated fund to accelerate the growth of boys and men’s volleyball nationwide. Speraw currently serves on the board of directors for the 2027 Women’s World Cup and Building Brilliant Futures, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting academic achievement, health and teamwork through sports.
Speraw earned his bachelor of science in microbiology and molecular genetics from UCLA. He resides in Southern California with his wife and two daughters.
