Sweep x 2: U.S. Women Post Shutouts at Final 6

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 7, 2022) – The U.S. Women’s Team competing at the Pan American Cup improved to 3-1 after winning two matches in a row on Tuesday and Wednesday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

On Tuesday, the U.S. swept Canada (25-19, 25-22, 25-22). On Wednesday, it swept Cuba (25-18, 27-25, 25-17).

On Thursday, the U.S. Women will play the Dominican Republic (4-0) in their final round-robin match. The top four teams advance to the semifinals.

Against Cuba on Wednesday, the U.S. Women led in kills (41-35) and aces (7-6). The U.S. scored 25 points on Cuba’s errors while committing 14. Cuba led in blocks (5-4).

Opposite Stephanie Samedy led the U.S. in scoring with 12 points on 10 kills (.471 hitting efficiency), one block and one ace.

Outside hitter Roni Jones-Perry scored 11 points on nine kills, one block and one ace. Outside hitter Avery Skinner scored 11 points on 10 kills and one ace.

Setter Tori Dilfer scored six points on two kills, one block and a match-high three aces. She set the U.S. Women to a .415 hitting efficiency.

“Cuba is a very physical team that definitely challenged us,” Dilfer said in a NORCECA press release. “We handled their strong service well and with that we were able to take advantage on our net game.”

Middle blocker Madeleine Gates totaled seven points on five kills one block and one ace.

Middle Brionne Butler scored five points on five kills. Libero Kendall White was credited with six digs and nine excellent receptions. Dilfer led the team in digs with seven. Skinner also had nine excellent receptions.

In Tuesday’s match against Canada, Team USA led in blocks (7-4) and aces (6-5). The U.S. scored 26 points on Canada’s errors and gave up 15. Canada led in kills (39-36).

Opposite Nia Reed led the U.S. in scoring with 15 points on 14 kills and one block. Outside hitter Dani Drews added 12 points on nine kills and a match-high three aces.

Outside hitter Alli (Stummler) Linnehan totaled eight points on six kills and two blocks. Middle Ronika Stone tallied six points on four kills, one block and one ace. Middle Ali Bastianelli scored six points on three kills, two blocks and one ace.

Setter Bergen Reilly made her first start and scored two points on an ace and a block. She set the team to a .242 hitting efficiency.

Libero Hana Lishman was credited with four digs and four excellent receptions. Stummler led in digs with nine and in receptions with 14.

“Our team did a very good job responding to yesterday’s match when we were struggling with reception,” U.S. Head Coach Michelle Chatman said. “Canada put some serving pressure on us this match and our response was better today. I think we grew as a team through today’s game.”
