COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 17, 2024) – The International Volleyball Hall of Fame will induct two people with ties to USA Volleyball and honor three others during a ceremony on Oct. 19 in Holyoke, Mass.
Tim Hovland, who played on U.S. beach and indoor teams, will be inducted for his beach volleyball success.
Sue Lemaire will be inducted as an international referee.
John Kessel, the late Bill Kauffman and the late Ed Chan will also be honored at the ceremony.
Hovland won 60 titles including six Manhattan Beach Opens, four Hermosa Beach Opens and more than $1 million in prize money. He teamed with Hall of Famer Mike Dodd (2012) to win 18 titles in 1988-89 alone and reached the podium in 39 of 48 tournaments.
Hovland received the USA Volleyball All-Time Great Player Award in 2020.
In 1983, Lemaire became the first female international volleyball referee certified by the FIVB. She participated in numerous international indoor events including the Pan Am Games (1987), four World University Games (1983, 1985, 1993, 1995) and the Goodwill Games (1994). She also became an international beach referee, officiating at the 1997 World Championships and the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.
Lemaire has received five USA Volleyball honors: the George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball Award (1985), the Golden Whistle Award (1985), the Wilbur H. “Wil” Peck Referee – Emeritus Award (2005), the Karen M. Johnson Human Resources Award (2001) and the Glen G. Davies Referee Service Award (1997).
Kessel is receiving the Mintonette Medallion of Merit Award. He worked for USA Volleyball from 1985-2020 in a variety of roles and retired as the director of sport development. He has traveled to all 50 U.S. states and to more than 64 additional countries to run clinics to aid in the development of the sport globally.
Kessel has received four USA Volleyball honors: the Harold T. Friermood “Frier” Award (2019), the George J. Fisher Leader in Volleyball Award (2006), the Harry E. Wilson Distinguished Service Award (2004) and the Rebecca B. Howard Diversity “STAR” Award (2001).
Kauffman is being honored posthumously with the Award for Media Excellence. He worked for USA Volleyball from 2006-2020 as the senior manager of communications. He was also the first communication coordinator for the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.
Chan is also being honored posthumously with the Award for Media Excellence. He was a co-owner of Volleyball Magazine and served as its director of photography. He was a top beach volleyball photographer and often allowed USA Volleyball to use his photos, particularly those from the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
