Beach National Team IC Coach
John Mayer is a Beach National Team independent contractor coach, currently working with Stafford Slick and Billy Allen.
Mayer has been the head women’s beach volleyball coach at Loyola Marymount University since the school added the sport in 2015.
In 2019, Mayer was named West Coach Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Lions to a 27-11 record and a league title. His 2018 squad finished 22-14. At LMU, he coached U.S. Beach National Team member Sarah Sponcil.
Prior to being named head coach at LMU, Mayer spent the previous four seasons as a volunteer assistant coach working with the LMU sand volleyball program. He had also served as the head coach of the men’s volleyball program at Santa Monica College since 2008. There, Mayer was named 2015 Coach of the Year after guiding his squad to a state championship.
A 2005 graduate of Pepperdine University, Mayer helped guide Pepperdine to a national title in his senior year. Before transferring to Pepperdine, Mayer won a pair of state championships playing at Pierce College.
As a player for the U.S. Beach National Team, Mayer played in five 2018 FIVB World Tour events with Trevor Crabb, winning the Lucerne 3-star and Jinjiang 2-star. He also played on the FIVB World Tour with Ryan Doherty in 2015-16, and has earned medals on the NORCECA Continental Tour.
Mayer was born in 1982 in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and lives in Mar Vista, Calif. with his wife, Dr. Paola Rodriguez, and daughter.
