COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 23, 2018) – Fourteen U.S. men’s players will compete Aug. 28-Sept. 2 at the Men’s Pan American Cup in Cordova, Veracruz, Mexico.
The top five finishing teams at the Pan Am Cup will qualify for the 2019 Pan American Games on July 26-Aug. 11 in Lima, Peru.
Setters on the team will be Jonah Seif, who will serve as team captain, and James Shaw.
Outside hitters are Kupono Fey, Ryan Coenen, Jake Arnitz and David Wieczorek.
Middle blockers are Price Jarman, Mitch Stahl, Matt Pollock and Brendan Schmidt.
Opposites are Arvis Greene and Kyle Russell. The liberos are Kyle Dagostino and J.T. Hatch.
Jarman, Stahl, Greene, Seif, Arnitz and Wieczorek all played on the 2017 Pan American Cup team that finished fifth in Canada.
U.S. Head Coach David Hunt said the team was assembled with a vision of the future.
“I talked a lot with John Speraw about not just where guys are right now, but who could help the senior team in the future,” Hunt said. “This is an opportunity to see some guys who haven’t played a lot in a match environment.
“We have a lot of size and physicality. So far, we’re showing to be a pretty good blocking team.”
Hunt, the men’s volleyball head coach at Pepperdine, will lead the team with help from UCLA Men’s Assistant Coach John Hawks and USC Men’s Assistant Coach Greg Walker, who also coaches the U.S. Men’s Sitting Team.
The U.S. Men’s pool includes defending champion Argentina, Puerto Rico, which is coming off a victory at the 2018 Barranquilla XXIII Central American and Caribbean Games and Peru.
“Our challenge is going to be our ability to side out against teams that run something different than we’re used to,” Hunt said. “But I’d rather be in our pool than an easier pool and have to go from zero-to-110 in the quarterfinals and semifinals.”
The U.S. Men have won the Pan American Cup five times since the competition began in 2006. Their most recent victory was in 2012. Their most recent podium finish was in 2014 when they took silver.
