Indoor scorers record everything that occurs during a volleyball match. They keep track of the score, substitutions, and everything else referees must know between points. Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to multitask are two important characteristics of scorers.

Indoor Scoring Certification and Requirements
The entry-level professional scorer certification is awarded by a region. Please contact your region’s officials or scorer chair.
The second-level professional scorer certification is awarded by a tegion. Please contact your tegion’s officials or scorer chair.
Certification and Application Requirements

Responsibilities and Opportunities
- After receiving your USA Volleyball National Scorer certification, you will be able to wear your USA Volleyball National Scorer patch while scoring at USA Volleyball-sanctioned events.
- A USA Volleyball National Scorer is authorized to score USA Volleyball-sanctioned competition within all USAV regions and is qualified to score at the USA Volleyball Open National Championship. National Scorers may also be assigned to score at a junior national championship final match in any division, if needed.
- Certification as a USA Volleyball National Scorer is valid for a period of five (5) years. To maintain certification, the scorer must complete the following:
Annual Requirements
- Register as a member of a USA Volleyball region and remain an active scorer with his/her RVA.
- Have a current background screening on file with USA Volleyball.
- Have current SafeSport training on file with USA Volleyball.
- Remit annual dues. Look to the Officials Indoor Scorer Hub page for deadlines.
- Complete the USA Volleyball National Scorer Training.
- Complete the USA Volleyball National Scorer Exam.
- Must be taken online
- Must be completed to 100% and is open book

- Complete the Critical Rules and Points of Emphasis
- Complete Uniform Requirements and Reminders
- Complete the USA Volleyball National Scorer Exam.
Attendance Requirements
One year during this five-year certification term you must attend the USA Volleyball Open National Championship for a minimum of one block (three days).
In any other year during this five-year certification term, you must attend any of the following events.
- USA Volleyball Open National Championship for a minimum of one block (three days)
- GJNC 18s, GJNC, or BJNC as a referee and score a Gold final match in any division
- International event as a primary scorer
- Submit two score sheets to the Officials Development Office from a qualifying event.
- National Special Olympics Championships
- Pro Events (Athletes Unlimited/Pro Volleyball Federation) as the primary scorer
- Any other USA Volleyball-sanctioned event pre-approved by the Officials Development Office by emailing [email protected]. The event must use the official USA Volleyball scoresheet.
- To receive credit for working as the primary scorer at any of the qualifying events listed above, the National Scorer is responsible for submitting a copy of the score sheet by email to the Officials Development Office ([email protected]) within 21 days of the event. The National Scorer must include the name of the head official/assignor of the event.
A USAV National Scorer encountering unusual difficulty in meeting the attendance requirements must request a sabbatical. National Scorers wanting to take a sabbatical must notify their region and follow all region requirements regarding remaining in good standing. They must also submit the USAV National Sabbatical Form.
A USAV National Scorer with less than a one (1) certification term as a National Scorer who allows that certification to expire, may file for the RISE Expired or Retired Program.
The National Scorer will need to send an email to their Region to be recommended to the RISE Expired or Retired Program.
Repercussions for not fulfilling requirements
- Membership Requirements
- If membership, SafeSport, background screen, and National Scorer dues are not completed by the deadline, your National Scorer certification may be suspended.
- National Scorer Training
- If the coursework is not completed, you will not be able to attend any national championship events as a National Scorer.
- Attendance requirements
- A USA Volleyball National Scorer who does not attend the required tournaments during any certification period and does not ask for the one-year sabbatical of certification, will be placed on a one-year probation period.
- In the year following probation, if the scorer does not attend a required tournament, the USA Volleyball National Scorer certification will be suspended.
- In the year following probation, if the scorer attends a required tournament, a one-year certification extension will be granted. If the scorer attends a required tournament in the second year following the probation, a new five (5) year certification period is awarded.
- A USA Volleyball National Scorer who does not attend the required tournaments during any certification period and does not ask for the one-year sabbatical of certification, will be placed on a one-year probation period.
- Any USAV National Scorer in good standing, with at least one (1) certification term as a USAV National Scorer, may retire by submitting the USAV retirement form.
- To continue working as a scorer with USAV, a USAV National Scorer (Retired) must register annually with USA Volleyball and the appropriate RVA and remain an active scorer in good standing within his/her RVA. Remaining in good standing within the RVA includes but is not limited to, satisfying all requirements for recertification as a Regional Scorer within that RVA.
- If a USAV National Scorer (Retired) does not wish to work as a scorer with USAV, they are not required to remain in good standing within the RVA. The scorer will not be allowed to score at any USAV event, but they will retain their National Scorer (Retired) status.
- A USAV National Scorer (Retired) is authorized to wear the USAV National Scorer patch while scoring at USAV-sanctioned events.
- A USAV National Scorer (Retired) is authorized to score at all USAV-sanctioned regional qualifier and national tournaments.
- A USAV National Scorer (Retired) may file for the RISE Expired or Retired Program
- The National Scorer will need to send email to their Region to be recommended to the RISE Expired or Retired Program.
To become an International Scorer, the scorer must:
- Be a currently certified USA National Indoor scorer and have held that certification for no less than three consecutive years.
- Be currently in good standing with the appropriate Regional Volleyball Association as well as with the National Office.
