If you have been a Regional official with SCSN for at least one year and wish to advance your certification to the next level, please read below on the process for becoming a Junior National official with USAV.
Pathway to Becoming a Junior National Official (PDF)
In preparation, please read this document (PDF) to familiarize yourself with the expectations of a JN candidate. As well, you should read all of the information under the Junior National Referee Application section.
Please keep in mind that the process for becoming a Junior National official can take several years. Factors like skill level, commitment to the region and years in the JN program will all be considered when SCSN selects their candidates for the year.
The selection process is done via a Ratings Committee including head officials and assignors from SCSN.
For SCSN, it is HIGHLY recommended to attend the Las Vegas Classic, and Red Rock Raves. USAV requires a minimum of two USAV national qualifiers and one USAV national championship; or one USAV national qualifier and two USAV national championships; or three USAV national championships, as well as attending training camps.
Officials are not required to be a part of the SCSN Junior National program in order to apply with USAV. But if you are a part of our program you will acquire many mentors, feedback and training to better prepare you.
Step 1 – Application to SCSN
Email Patrick Bradley for an Officiating Activities Resume. This is your application to be accepted into the SCSN Junior National Program. If you wish to be considered for the current SCSN Junior National Program, this must be filled out with the matches you have worked for SCSN only. Please do not include any out-of-region matches, high school, JVA, AAU or college.
The deadline for the application is EOD on the first Sunday in January of the current season. Please send applications to John Pedersen, Patrick Bradley and Todd Livdahl. Subject line on the email needs to be “SCSN Junior National Application”.
Step 2 – Advanced Camp
Out of the applications received, eight officials will be selected by the SCSN Ratings Committee to attend the SCSN Advanced Camp.
The SCSN Advanced Camp for the current year has not been scheduled, but the date will be announced soon.
If your application is selected, you must be able to attend the SCSN Advanced Camp in order to be considered as an applicant for the current year. The purpose of the Advanced Camp is to mentor and train the camp attendees and also give valuable feedback that will help everyone improve.
Step 3 – Confirmation as an USAV Applicant
After the Advanced Camp and the Las Vegas Classic, the SCSN Ratings Committee will notify all camp attendees one of the following:
● The official is one of our top candidates and should submit their USAV Junior National application this year (details in Step 4). Wait to book any flights until accepted by USAV as a candidate.
● The official needs at least another year of mentoring and development and should apply again next year.
Officials will be notified of their status as soon as possible after the Ratings Committee meets.
Step 4 – Apply to USAV
If you are confirmed by SCSN as an applicant, go ahead and start the application process with USAV with the instructions from this document (PDF). As stated in the document, the deadline is April 1. Officials who are accepted as candidates from USAV are expected to attend the Girls Junior National Championship (GJNC) tournament sometime in late June/July.
If you are unable to attend the GJNC, we need to know right away. Please do not confirm your candidacy and then back out because you are unable to attend and take a spot from someone else.
Step 5 – Confirmation as an USAV Candidate
Once you are confirmed as a JN Candidate from USAV, you can go ahead and book your travel and continue the process outlined by USAV. The region will do their best to ensure all candidates are prepared for their certification by mentoring and training them throughout the spring.
Thank you for your dedication to SCSN and to your commitment on becoming the best official you can. Please feel free to contact John Pedersen or Patrick Bradley if you have any questions about this process.
