The trials determine which collegiate athletes will represent the United States at the FISU Summer World University Games, July 16-27 in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.
Held every two years, the Summer World University Games bring together thousands of student-athletes across multiple sports. Beach volleyball has twice been included as an optional event (2011 and 2013), with Emily Day and Heather Hughes winning silver in 2011.
To be eligible for the World University Games Trials, athletes must be born between Jan. 1, 2000, and Dec. 31, 2007, and either actively pursuing or recently have obtained a degree. A full list of eligibility requirements is available on the World University Games Beach Trials registration page.
Beach Collegiate National Team head coaches Dan Friend and Patty Dodd will lead the U.S. team’s preparation and competition.
“I’m excited and honored to continue my work with USA Volleyball,” said Friend, head coach of the Lewis University men’s volleyball team. “It’s a great opportunity to represent the USA at the World University Games and help our athletes compete. The trials are extremely competitive, and I’m looking forward to working with the team that wins.”
Dodd, women’s head coach at MBSand and a Beach National Team Training Group coach, also anticipates a high level of play.
“The trials will bring the best collegiate talent for the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the World University Games,” she said.
Athletes should also save the date for the FIVB U21 World Championship Trials, June 16-19, in Hermosa Beach. Registration will open later this month.
