COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – All four U.S. beach teams in La Paz, Mexico medaled but none of the teams were able to bring home gold in the third stop of the NORCECA Continental Tour.
Canada was able to earn gold for the women, besting Kelly Reeves and Ali McColloch who were trying for their second gold medal of the Tour. Kimberly DiCello and Kendra Vanzwieten finished with bronze after sweeping Costa Rica.
The men saw a bit of deja vu from last week’s results, after Cuba earned back-to-back gold when they beat Billy Allen and Stafford Slick for the top prize yet again. Trevor and Taylor Crabb also landed on the podium, with bronze.
All four American teams swept their pools before heading into the quarterfinals. There, DiCello/Vanzwieten moved past Mexico’s Rios/Santoyo 21-17, 21-15 and Reeves/McColloch topped the other Mexican team, Estrada/Rios, 21-14, 21-15. In the semifinal, Reeves and McColloch bested DiCello and Vanzwieten 22-20, 21-15 in a little revenge for last week’s semifinal match-up between the two teams.
DiCello and Vanzwieten continued with one final win, 21-19, 21-13, against Costa Rica for bronze. However this time around Julie Gordon and Brandie Wilkerson of Canada got the best of an American team, beating Reeves and McColloch for gold, 19-21, 21-11, 15-10.
Respective wins in the quarterfinals saw Slick/Allen sweep Mexico’s Rubio/Gaxiola 21-17, 21-19 and the Crabb brothers over Mexico’s Galindo/Revuelta 21-17, 21-18. Slick and Allen once again came on top in the series again the Crabbs, 21-13, 21-16, sending them to the bronze medal match where they won in three-set fashion against Canada, 22-24, 22-20, 15-9.
In a bitter sweet moment of reaching the finale for a second week, Slick and Allen once again fell to Cuba’s Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez, in a score of 21-15, 21-15.
The NORCECA Continental Tour is scheduled to continue next week in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
