COLUMBUS, Ohio (July 3, 2017) – The 12-and-under title handed out on Monday was the first of the 2017 Boys Junior National Championship.

The title was given to Puerto Rico’s Borinquen Coqui 12-1M, which defeated the Northern California Region’s Bay to Bay 12-1, 25-21, 25-12 in the final. Sharing third place was Northern California’s MVVC 12 Red and Puerto Rico’s Vaqueros 12-1.

Borinquen Coqui also beat Bay to Bay on the first day of competition, but the Southern California team came back to win its next five matches. Bay to Bay defeated Vaqueros, 16-25, 25-19, 15-10 to reach the final.

“Throughout the tournament we continued to get better and better,” Bay to Bay Head Coach Kyle Dagostino said. “I think this was by far our best day. The semifinal showed that when we came back from an 0-1 deficit and upset the No. 1 seed. A lot of people didn’t expect us to do that.”

The Bay to Bay 12s received great support from older club players, who cheered from the sidelines during the gold medal match.

A record 510 teams and more than 5,000 top boys’ junior players, ages 12-18, from the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam are participating in the Boys’ Junior National Championships this year.
