COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena repeated as AVP winners, taking the men’s title at the Austin Open. April Ross and Whitney Pavlik won the women’s bracket in their first victory as a team.
Dalhausser and Lucena topped the field on the AVP Tour in their third consecutive win, dating back to 2016’s finale in Chicago. It marked their sixth AVP title as a team. For Pavlik and Ross, it was their first title as a team in their second AVP tournament together.
Ross and Pavlik beat Kimberly DiCello and Emily Stockman in the final, 14-21, 21-16, 15-11. Stockman and DiCello first teamed up for 2017’s opener in Huntington Beach, where they finished fifth. In Austin, third-seeded DiCello/Stockman won four before falling in the final, including their quarterfinal matchup against Ross/Pavlik, where they won 18-21, 21-11, 15-11. They followed that up with a three-set thriller in the semifinal against Amanda Dowdy/Irene Pollock, 21-13, 17-21, 15-13.
Second seeded Ross/Pavlik beat Jennifer Fopma/Kelly Reeves in the contender’s bracket to earn their way back into the semifinals. Once there, Ross and Pavlik edged Angela Bensend/Geena Urango 21-11, 21-15 and ended on a victory against DiCello/Stockman for first place.
Dalhausser and Lucena made quick work of the bracket, not dropping a set in five matches to win the finale against Sean Rosenthal and Trevor Crabb, 21-12, 21-19. Rosenthal/Crabb, seeded second, went 4-0 before the final, including a close semifinal victory against John Mayer/Jeremy Casebeer, 20-22, 21-19, 15-10. Billy Allen and Stafford Slick tied for third after dropping their semifinal match against the eventual tournament winners, 21-17, 21-16.
