COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 9, 2026) – The U.S. Men’s National Team got off to a strong start at the 2026 NORCECA Pan American Cup with a 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-14) victory over Costa Rica on Sunday in Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico.
The U.S. will have a day off before meeting Puerto Rico at 3 p.m. PT on Tuesday.
The U.S. recorded 16 blocks in the match (to just three for Costa Rica) with middle blocker Parker Tomkinson posting half of his team’s blocks. The U.S. finished with nearly double the number of kills (38-20) and served all three aces in the match.
Tomkinson finished with a match-high 15 points, contributing six kills and an ace to his eight blocks. Outside hitter Sean Kelly totaled 11 points on nine kills, a block and an ace. Middle blocker Cameron Thorne rounded out the double-digit scorers with six kills and four blocks.
Libero Troy Gooch recorded a match-high 12 digs and finished with six excellent receptions, second only to Kelly’s seven. Opposite Kyle Hobus scored eight points on seven kills and a block. Setter Tread Rosenthal led the team to a .368 hitting efficiency percentage while scoring five points on two kills, two blocks and an ace. Outside hitters Jacob Pasteur (four) and Patrick Rogers (three) combined for seven kills.
The U.S. scored the first three points of the match behind a Thorne kill and a Rosenthal ace. The lead grew to four points, 6-2, on a Hobus kill. Costa Rica was within three points, 10-7, when the U.S. scored four points in a row with Pasteur recording a pair of kills. A Tomkinson kill and block followed by a Rosenthal block pushed the lead to 19-11. A Kelly kill in between a Thorne kill and block raised the advantage to double digits, 23-13. Another Thorne kill, his fifth point of the set, made it 24-14 and two points later, Pasteur ended the set. Hobus (four kills) and Rosenthal (two kills, a block and an ace) each scored four points.
Blocks by Hobus and Kelly helped stake the U.S. to a 4-0 lead in the second set before Costa Rica battled back to tie the set 9-9. Costa Rica took a 13-11 lead before a service error and Thorne block tied the set back up. A four-point Costa Rica stretch forced the U.S. to take a timeout, down 17-13. A Rogers kill and a Kelly kill set up by a diving dig from Hobus cut the lead to two, 19-17. After a Costa Rica timeout, Tomkinson scored back-to-back points on a kill and a block to square the set. Costa Rica regained its two-point lead, 23-21, before serving a ball that went off the net before falling out of bounds and Rogers tied the set 23-23.
On the following play, a miscommunication appeared to cause the ball to be going out of bounds, but Rogers made a phenomenal save and Gooch sent the ball over the net. Costa Rica’s ensuing attack was blocked by Thorne to give the U.S. set point. Costa Rica scored on the next play but then served well beyond the end line to give the U.S. a second set point. The U.S. took a 2-0 match lead on Tomkinson’s second block of the set and third of the match. Kelly led the U.S. with six points on five kills and a block.
Consecutive Tomkinson kills put the U.S. out in front, 9-5, and started a five-point run that ended with another Tomkinson block, this time as part of a triple block. Thorne pounded a ball down to the middle of the court to give the U.S. a 16-7 advantage. Three strong serves from Kainoa Wade doubled the U.S. lead, 22-11, as Tomkinson recorded two more blocks and Wade scored on a tip. Costa Rica scored the next three points before the U.S. finished the match with a three-point run of its own. Tomkinson’s fifth block of the set gave the U.S. match point and Kelly put down an overpass to complete the victory. Tomkinson scored nine points in the set, adding three kills and an ace to his five blocks.
