Kelly Claes/Sarah Sponcil advanced to the qualification round on the women’s side for the third time in three tournaments at Cancun. They beat Kelly Reeves/Terese Cannon, 2-0 (21-14, 21-18) for the berth. Earlier in the day, Reeves/Cannon came back to beat Emily Day/Sara Hughes in three sets (19-21, 21-17, 15-13) for the right to face Claes/Sponcil.
For the men, Chaim Schalk/Theo Brunner earned a qualifier berth for the second time in the Cancun hub. They defeated Bill Kolinske/Miles Evans, 2-0 (22-20, 21-14).
CANCUN, Mexico (April 27, 2021) – The end of Olympic qualification approaches for the U.S. Beach National Team with Tournament 3 of the Cancun hub, which will run April 28-May 2, 2021 at the Grand Oasis Cancun resort.
Six American duos will begin the tournament in the main draw. On the men’s side, Taylor Crabb/Jake Gibb, Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena and Tri Bourne/Trevor Crabb have earned the right to bypass the qualifier, as have Alix Klineman/April Ross, Brooke Sweat/Kerri Walsh Jennings and Kelley Kolinske/Emily Stockman for the women.
One men’s pair and one women’s pair will have to fight through qualification on Wednesday, April 28. Those teams will be determined on Tuesday, April 27 during country quota matches. Kelly Claes/Sarah Sponcil, Sara Hughes/Emily Day and Kelly Reeves/Terese Cannon will compete for the sole women’s spot in the qualifier, and Bill Kolinske/Miles Evans will play Chaim Schalk/Theo Brunner for the men’s qualifier bid.
A four-star stop on the FIVB World Tour, Tournament 3 offers points toward Olympic qualification. After Tournament 3, only two more World Tour stops will offer Olympic qualification points, meaning beach duos have just three more chances to maximize their Olympic Ranking points and earn a bid to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.
Below are the American Olympic Ranking points standings and scenarios each team needs to add points and to take a qualifying position. Only a team’s top 12 results during the qualification period are considered for its Olympic ranking. U.S. teams are now trying to replace lower results with better placements.
The top two American teams of each gender earn a berth to Tokyo provided they’re also ranked in the top 15 of the world Olympic Rankings. Only Klineman/Ross has mathematically clinched an Olympic berth.

The men’s field for Tournament 3 will be depleted compared to the other tournaments in Cancun as only five of the top 10 pairs in the world rankings will compete. Norway’s Anders Mol and Christian Sorum, champions of the first two tournaments and the top-ranked pair in the world, have left the hub, as have second-ranked Viacheslav Krasilnikov/Oleg Stoyanovskiy of Russia. Only Ta. Crabb/Gibb (No. 5) and Brazilians Alison/Alvaro Filho (No. 3) of the world’s top five will compete in Tournament 3.
The women’s field is a different story as all but one of the best 15 teams will play in Cancun once again.
The field includes Brazilian pairs Taiana Lima/Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Agatha Bednarczuk/Eduarda Santos Lisboa, who won the first and second tournaments in Cancun, respectively.
