U.S. Men Fall to Canada at 2026 Men's Pan Am Cup, Finish Pool Play 3-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 13, 2026) – The U.S. Men’s National Team suffered its first loss of the 2026 NORCECA Pan American Cup, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 34-32) to Canada, on Thursday night in Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico.

The U.S. (3-1) will play in the quarterfinal round tomorrow at 5 p.m. PT against an opponent still to be determined. Canada received a bye into Saturday’s semifinals.

Each team recorded 32 kills with the U.S. serving one more ace (4-3). Canada led 10-7 in blocks and most significantly, made 13 fewer errors (39-26), including seven fewer in the third set.

Outside hitter Patrick Rogers led all players with 11 kills and shared match-high honors with 13 points, adding a block and an assist. Middle blocker Parker Tomkinson led the team with four blocks and finished with eight points. Jackson Cryst (four kills, one block), Kainoa Wade (five kills) and Sean Kelly (four kills, one ace) each scored five points.

Setter Tread Rosenthal contributed a kill, a block and an ace. He also paced the team with nine kills. Jacob Pasteur recorded a kill and an ace, while Kyle Hobus produced two kills. Libero Jacob Reilly led the way in excellent receptions with seven followed by Rogers with five.

The teams exchanged the first six points of the match before Rogers gave the U.S. its first lead, 4-3. A Rosenthal block and a Kelly kill on a rally that featured an incredible dig by Wade gave the U.S. an 8-6 lead. A block gave Canada its first two-point lead, 15-13, the first time either team put together three consecutive points. Canada scored five points in a row for a 21-15 lead. Pasteur came in to serve and immediately delivered an ace to cut the deficit to four points, 22-18. Canada earned set point by scoring the next two points and took the set in spite of the U.S. saving one set point on the seventh kill of the set for Rogers.

Canada jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. A Kelly kill off a Rosenthal dig brought the U.S. within a point, 4-3, but Canada regained its three-point advantage, 7-4, on an ace. Another ace pushed the margin to five points, 11-6, before a Tomkinson kill and Cryst block cut the deficit to three. A Pasteur kill and Kelly ace brought the U.S. within two points, 14-12. The U.S. did not get any closer than two points as Canada took a two-set lead.

Rosenthal started the third set with an ace and kills by Cryst and Tomkinson gave the U.S. its first two-point lead, 4-2, since 8-6 in the opening set. Back-to-back Tomkinson blocks helped push the U.S. lead to four points, 9-5. The lead doubled, 12-6, on kills from Cryst and Wade. Canada used a 7-3 spurt to cut the deficit back to two points, 15-13. Another Tomkinson block increased the U.S. lead to four, 18-14, but Canada scored the next two points to prompt a U.S. timeout. Rogers scored for a 19-16 U.S. lead and two points later, both Rosenthal and Cryst went to put away an overpass with Rosenthal ending up shaken up on the Canada side of the net. A Canada block evened the set at 20 apiece.

A Cryst kill and Rogers ace put the U.S. up 22-20 but a pair of U.S. errors out of a timeout tied the set again. Canada took its first lead of the set, 23-22, before Rogers delivered an off-balance kill. The teams split the next two points before Canada earned its second match point with a block. Hobus saved match point and the teams traded service errors. Cryst scored on a give-and-go to save another match point and tie the set at 27-27. Rogers scored off the block to save a fourth match point. The teams exchanged errors before Canada earned its sixth match point, but a service error tied the set at 30 each. After the teams traded errors, Canada scored off the block for a 32-31 lead, but a Rogers kill kept the match going. Two U.S. errors ended the match. Rogers (three kills, one block, one ace) and Tomkinson (two kills, three blocks) scored five points apiece.
