Girls celebrating win

After dropping its first match to Coast 12-1 (SCVA) on Thursday, Tejas 12 Black (North Texas) won nine straight matches to capture the 12 USA title Sunday at the 2022 Girls Junior National Championship in Indianapolis.

Tejas was one of nine champions crowned Sunday, three in the 12s division and six in 13s. Tejas defeated Tribe 12 Elite Altone (Florida) 17-25, 25-11, 15-8 for the gold. It was Tribe’s only loss of the tournament.

Like Tejas, Arete 13 Navy Telos (North Texas) also had to a rebound from an earlier loss in the tournament to advance to the final of 13 USA. And, in similar fashion, Arete went three sets for gold, defeating United 13’s Arete (SCVA), 26-24, 15-15, 15-9 for the title.

“I coached them last year in 12s, and we ended up a little short, we finished fifth,” said Arete 13 Navy Telos coach Tara Labay. “This year, we played Open every qualifier and came short, and then we played at Lone Star and won the whole thing. These girls, nobody works harder than they do. They’re just awesome.”

Head coach Edward Chen of Skyline 13 White was equally as proud of his team after they won 13 Patriot, defeating Actyve 13-Black (SCVA), 25-21, 28-26.

“It is a journey,” he said. “They’ve grown in the last four days more than the last six weeks basically. That’s kind of exactly what we’re looking for. These girls, they’re not the strongest, not the fastest; we’re the third team out of the club, and they know that coming in. But that’s why I love the game of volleyball. There’s a lot of ways you can be good and can contribute, and that’s what they did.”
