COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 15, 2026) – The U.S. Men’s National Team reached the gold medal match at the 2026 NORCECA Pan American Cup in Cuernavaca Morelos with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-16) win over host Mexico in Saturday night’s semifinals.
The U.S. (5-1) will meet Puerto Rico, an upset winner over previously unbeaten Canada, in the semifinals, in tomorrow’s gold medal match at 4:30 p.m. PT. The teams met in preliminary round action with the U.S. winning in three sets.
The U.S. finished with 39 kills to 27 for Mexico and again dominated in blocks with a 12-5 advantage, including 10-1 in the final two sets. Each team served a pair of aces.
Five U.S. players scored at least eight points with the balanced attack helping the U.S. hit at a .426 efficiency percentage. Middle blocker Cameron Thorne hit .889 with eight kills in nine attacks, adding three blocks for 11 points. Outside hitter Patrick Rogers hit at a .444 clip and also finished with 11 points, combining nine kills, a block and an ace. Setter Michael Wright ran the offense that kept Mexico off guard and scored three points on two blocks and a kill.
Middle Parker Tomkinson again led the team in blocks with four, reaching double digits in scoring with six kills. Opposite Kyle Hobus totaled nine points on eight kills and a block and outside Jacob Pasteur contributed eight points on seven kills and a block. Libero Troy Gooch led all players with 11 digs and five excellent receptions. Outside Sterling Foley served for seven points in the match, including one ace.
Mexico took an early 5-2 lead in the match, but the U.S. scored the next three points and the set was tied five times before the U.S. moved ahead 13-10 on a Rogers kill, a Pasteur kill on a back row attack and a Mexico hitting error that caught the net and landed out of bounds. Hobus scored to put the U.S. ahead 16-12 but Mexico registered a block on a rally that included terrific defense on both sides and scored again on a hitting error, leading to a U.S. timeout.
A Thorne stuff gave the U.S. a 19-15 lead and forced Mexico to use its final timeout. Foley served for five points, including an ace, to give the U.S. set point at 24-15. Two points later, Thorne scored off the block for his fourth point of the set, joining Hobus and Tomkinson with three kills apiece.
Thorne went to swing with his right hand, missed and somehow delivered an off-speed kill with his left hand and Rogers followed that with a block for a 5-2 U.S. lead in the second set. Wright put away an overpass off a Hobus serve for a 7-3 advantage. Mexico scored twice out of a timeout before Tomkinson handled a short serve and put a ball away on a feed from Wright. An ace capped a 5-1 Mexico run that tied the set at 8-8, leading the U.S. to take its first timeout. Tomkinson scored again followed by a Wright block as part of a double block with Thorne. Mexico scored the following point and had a swing to tie the set, but a Pasteur block shut down that attack.
A diving Gooch dig that led to a Hobus kill gave the U.S. a 13-11 lead. A great up by Pasteur set himself up for a kill after a set from Wright and a 15-13 advantage. A Mexico block evened the set at 16-16 before Pasteur put the U.S. back ahead and Foley came in to serve for two points, one on a Thorne block, for a three-point U.S. lead. After a Mexico point, the U.S. moved back ahead by four points for the first time since early in the set on a Thorne kill and a Mexico hitting error. Thorne scored his fifth point of the set for a 23-19 lead. A great up by Pasteur on a difficult serve combined with a Rogers kill gave the U.S. set point, which it immediately converted on a Tomkinson block. Pasteur joined Thorne in scoring five points on four kills and a block.
Rogers drilled a ball off the block to put the U.S. up 7-4 in the third set. A Thorne kill and another Tomkinson block extended the lead to four points, 11-7. Thorne extended his serving run to three points on a Rogers kill high off the double block and a Hobus block. Jacob Reilly came in to serve, not wearing the libero jersey, and a Mexico hitting error raised the margin to seven points, 15-8, causing Mexico to take a timeout. Wright put down a first ball for a 17-10 lead and the lead grew to eight, 19-11, when Mexico committed a hitting error after a great up on a tough Wright serve. Thorne’s third block of the match put the U.S. up 21-12. The U.S. earned match point when Rogers scored on a set from Hobus after a block cover from Pasteur and completed the victory on a Tomkinson block, keeping his streak alive of recording at least four blocks in each match he has played in the tournament.
