Girls U19 National Team competing at Pan Am Cup

TULSA, Okla. (July 22, 2022) – The U.S. Girls U21 National Team continued to roll through the Pan American Cup with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-15) semifinal win over Dominican Republic on Friday at the Cox Business Convention Center in Tulsa.

The United States (4-0) will play Brazil (4-0) for the championship at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday. Matches are being livestreamed on BallerTV.

Dominican Republic kept the pressure on the United States. Although the U.S. led in attacks (39-18) and blocks (4-1), the teams were tied in aces (6-6) and each team had 25 scoring errors.

“It was nice to be pushed,” U.S. Head Coach Jamie Morrison said. “The Dominicans have always been a good rival of the United States. I was happy they pushed us a little bit. We got to learn some things about our team. I’m sure tomorrow night will be a battle.”

Outside hitter Harper Murray led Team USA with 10 points on eight spikes, one block and one ace. Middle blocker Julia Blyashov added nine points on eight kills and one ace.

Dominican opposite Ariana Rodriguez led all scorers with 14 points on a match-high 12 attacks and two aces.

Opposite Abigail Mullen scored eight points on five kills, a block and two aces.

Middle blockers Maggie Mendelson and Andi Jackson each scored seven points. Mendelson scored on seven kills. Jackson had five kills, one block and one ace.

Outside hitter Kira Hutson played as a substitute and scored five points on four kills and one ace.

Setter Bergen Reilly scored two points on a kill and a block. She combined with backup Izzy Starck to set the U.S. Girls to a .467 hitting efficiency. Substitute outside hitter Torrey Stafford scored two points on two kills.

Libero Laney Choboy was credited with nine digs and nine excellent receptions.

Mendelson, the team captain, is looking forward to Saturday’s match against Brazil.

“We played them in a scrimmage our first night here,” Mendelson said. “I am super excited to get another try. We’re going to bring a lot of energy and it should be a fun game.”
