A Schieck ace kept the margin at three points, 18-15, but Germany came out of a timeout with four consecutive points to take the lead. The U.S. retook the lead and was up 22-21 when Germany scored the final four points to take the set.

An ace from West and a kill by Nieves gave the U.S. an early 9-4 lead in the second set. Germany used a 7-2 run to square the set at 11 apiece. A Flood ace capped a four-point streak that put the U.S. ahead 15-11. Germany scored seven of the next eight points to move ahead 18-16 and force a U.S. timeout. Two more aces from West put the U.S. back out in front, 20-19. It was Germany’s turn to make a run in the back-and-forth set, scoring five of the next six points for a 24-21 advantage and three set points to take a two-set lead. A great pass by West led to a Schieck kill to stave off the first set point. A Germany hitting error and a kill by Baker tied the set at 24-24. A block that ended one of the longest rallies of the match put the Netherlands up 19-18.
