UCI handed Long Beach its first loss of the season March 28.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 3, 2025) – This week’s roundup change reflects the big upset from the past week where UCI handed Long Beach its first loss of the season (0-3) on Friday night. UCI moves up to No. 4 and Hawaii drops down to No. 5. In DIII, we are ready for conference tournaments. Springfield and Southern Virginia flip flop while NYU is still leading the pack after completing a perfect 23-0 regular season.

The college roundup showcases some of the key matches of the week while also highlighting athletes who are part of the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program.

NCAA Division I/II

No. 1 Long Beach State

Long Beach split with then-No. 5 UCI over the weekend, dropping the Friday match 0-3 at home to snap a 20-match win streak. In the first match, UCI held a 7.5-0 blocking advantage and capitalized on 22 service errors by LBSU. The match attendance was a new record for men’s volleyball at Walter Pyramid (4,676). It was followed up by a sold-out crowd at the Bren Events Center in Irvine for the second match where Long Beach earned its revenge with a 3-0 win.

USA Volleyball National Team Development Program/LBSU Players

DiAeris McRaven was on the 2024 Men’s National Team that won gold at NORCECA Final 6 and silver at the 2024 NORCECA Pan Am Cup. He had six kills on Saturday.

Ben Braun was on the 2024 Men’s National Team that won gold at NORCECA Final 6 and silver at the 2024 NORCECA Pan Am Cup. He was also a member of the 2024 Collegiate National Team and the 2023 Beach Collegiate National Team. He had six kills and three blocks vs. UCI (Sat.).

Sebastiano Sani was on the 2023 U19 National Team that placed fourth at the 2023 U19 World Championships and took gold at the NORCECA U19 Pan Am Cup. He had five kills, two assists and one dig vs. UCI (Fri.).

Sebastian Rodriguez was a member of the 2023 Beach U23 National Team and the 2023 Beach Collegiate National Team. He had two digs vs. UCI (Fri.).

Nato Dickinson was a member of the Beach Collegiate National Team in 2024 and 2023 and competed at the 2024 Beach World University Championship. He had three kills and three assists vs. UCI (Fri.).

Kellen Larson was on the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team that won gold at the NORCECA Continental Championship and was on the Boys U19 National Teams in 2023 and 2022 that won gold medals at the U19 Pan Am Cup. He had four digs vs. UCI (Sat.).

Long Beach has six more members with NTDP connections.

Dane Hillis was a member of the 2023 U21 National Team that took silver at the Pan Am Cup and played on the 2022 U21 National Team that won gold at the Pan Am Cup. Ford Harman was a member of the 2023 Beach U19 National Team. Island Doty was a member of the 2023 Men’s U21 National Team. Chris Connelly was on the U21 National Team in 2023 and 2022 and the U19 National Team in 2021 and 2020. Isaiah Preuitt was on the 2023 U19 National Team that took gold at the NORCECA U19 Pan Am Cup.

No. 2 UCLA

UCLA picked up two more wins vs. Pepperdine home and away last week. The Bruins are 16-3 entering another MPSF meeting with GCU on the road for two matches this weekend.

USA Volleyball National Team Development Program/UCLA Players

Andrew Rowan was a member of the 2023 NORCECA Pan Am Cup Final Six team that won gold. He was also on the 2022 U21 National Team that won gold at the Pan American Cup. He had three kills, 44 assists, one ace, five blocks and 10 digs vs. Pepperdine (Sat.).

Cooper Robinson was on the 2024 Men’s National Team that won gold at NORCECA Final 6 and silver at the 2024 NORCECA Pan Am Cup. He had 17 kills, three assists, two blocks and five digs vs. Pepperdine (Sat.).

Zach Rama was on the 2024 Men’s National Team that won gold at NORCECA Final 6 and silver at the 2024 NORCECA Pan Am Cup. He was also on the 2023 Men’s U21 National Team that took home silver at the 2023 U21 Pan American Cup. He had 14 kills, one assist, one ace and one block vs. Pepperdine (Sat.).Cameron Thorne was a member of the 2024 Collegiate National Team. He had 10 kills, three aces, four blocks and two digs vs. Pepperdine (Sat.).

Sean Kelly was on the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team that won gold at the NORCECA Continental Championship. He was also a member of the U19 Boys teams that won gold at the NORCECA Pan Am Cup in 2023 and 2022. He had 12 kills, three assists, four blocks and seven digs vs. Pepperdine (Sat.).

UCLA has four more players on the roster with NTDP connections.

Kahale Clini was a member of the 2023 Boys U19 NORCECA Continental Championship Team. Sean McQuiggan was a member of the 2024 Collegiate National Team. Trent Taliaferro was on the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team that took gold at the U21 NORCECA Continental Championship and the 2023 Boys U19 National Team that competed at the FIVB World Championship and took gold at the NORCECA U19 Pan Am Cup. Micah Wong Diallo was on the 2024 Men’s National Team that won gold at NORCECA Final 6. He was also a member of the 2024 Collegiate National Team and the Men’s U21 National Team that took home silver at the 2023 U21 Pan American Cup.

No. 3 USC

The Trojans picked up two wins over GCU last week to bring their record to 18-2 on the season entering this week. It continues a stellar season for USC, which is now 6-0 in MPSF play before this week’s matches with Pepperdine, a record they have not had since 2015.

USA Volleyball National Team Development Program/USC

Caleb Blanchette has been a member of the Beach U19 National Team since 2022. He was also on the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team that won gold at the 2024 NORCECA Championship and the 2022 Boys U19 Pan Am Cup team that won gold. He had 43 assists, three blocks and 13 digs vs. GCU (Sat.). He is No. 1 in the nation in assists per set (11.30).

Sterling Foley was a member of the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team that won gold at the NORCECA Continental Championship. He was Named MVP and Best Spiker. He was also a member of the Boys U19 National Team in 2022 and 2023. He had 14 kills, two assists, one ace, two blocks and six digs vs. GCU (Sat.).

Parker Tomkinson was a member of the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team that won gold at the NORCECA Continental Championship. He was also a member of the 2023 Boys U19 NORCECA Continental Championship Team. He had six kills, two assists, one ace, five blocks and one dig vs. GCU (Sat.).

Dillon Klein was a member of the 2024 Men’s Collegiate National Team and the 2023 Men’s U21 National Team. He had 16 kills, one assist, two blocks and seven digs vs. GCU (Sat.). He is No. 4 in the nation in kills per set (4.25).

Markus Olsson was a member of the 2023 Men’s U21 National Team.

No. 4 UC Irvine

The Anteaters jump up to No. 4 thanks to the team’s statement win over Long Beach last week, a 3-0 sweep on the road in the first of two meetings in the black and blue rivalry. UCI’s standout senior Hilir Henno earns AVCA  Player of the Week honors for the first time this season. For the week, he averaged five kills and 5.83 points per set.

Nolan Flexen was on the 2024 Men’s National Team that won gold at NORCECA Final 6 and silver at the 2024 NORCECA Pan Am Cup. He had eight kills, three blocks, four digs and one assist vs. LBSU (Sat.).

No. 5 Hawaii

Hawaii put tallies back in the win column with two victories over UCSD at home last weekend. Things got chippy during the second meeting between the conference rivals. Both teams received warnings for talking through the net before Hawaii eventually sealed the 3-1 victory.

USA Volleyball National Team Development Program/Hawaii

Tread Rosenthal was a member of the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team that won gold at the NORCECA Continental Championship. He was also on the 2023 U19 National Team that placed fourth at the U19 World Championships and won gold at the NORCECA U19 Pan Am Cup. He had four kills, 41 assists and seven digs vs. UCSD (Sat.). He is No. 2 in the nation in assists per set (10.98).

Kainoa Wade was a member of the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team. He had two kills, one ace, one block and one dig vs. UCSD (Sat.).

Finn Kearney was a member of the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team that won gold at the NORCECA Continental Championship and the Boys U19 National Team in 2023 and 2022.

Justin Todd was a member of the 2024 Men’s U21 National Team.

NCAA Division III

No. 1 NYU

The Violets have passed every test that the regular season had to offer, moving to 23-0 with a 3-2 win over Vassar to close out the regular season. It’s on to the conference championship tournament  in New York City before the first round of the NCAA tournament beginning April 18.

No. 2 Springfield

Springfield defeated Southern Virginia 3-1 last week, handing the Knights their first loss of the season and moving up to No. 2. The team also picked up wins over St. Josephs (3-1) and began this week with a 3-0 win over Rivier. They have two more matches left vs. Vassar on the road and home vs. Merrimack to close out the DIII regular season.

USA Volleyball National Team Development Program/Springfield
Springfield is coached by Charlie Sullivan who has been head coach for the Boys U19 National Team since 2021. In 2024, he coached the Boys U19 team that took gold at the NORCECA Continental Championship. Sullivan received USA Volleyball’s All-Time Great Coach award in 2015.

No. 3 Southern Virginia

Since we last checked in, Southern Virginia fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with the loss to Springfield, but got back on track with 3-0 wins vs. St. Joseph’s (Long Island), Lynchburg, and Roanoke. The loss to Springfield was only their second in 57 matches. Even in the loss,  Christian Sheaffer recorded a career high 26 kills.
