COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 14, 2024) –The U.S. Girls U19 Team began the 2024 NORCECA Continental Championship with a dominating 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-21) victory over Cuba on Sunday at the Jorge Galeano Gymnasium in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The U.S. will face Canada at 5 p.m. PT on Monday (July 15). Canada opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Puerto Rico.

The U.S. finished the match with an overwhelming 35-5 advantage in kills and 11 more service aces (13-2). Each team registered three kills. Cuba scored 30 points on U.S. errors (11 hitting errors and 19 service errors), while the U.S. scored 24 points on opponent errors, 15 of which were hitting errors.

Each of the top five scorers in the match were U.S. players. Middle blockers Hazel Alevok and Elena Hoecke scored a match-high nine points. Alevok totaled four kills, a block and a match-high four aces. Hoecke finished with five kills, two blocks and two aces.

Outside hitters Audrey Flanagan and Devyn Wiest led all players with six kills. Flanagan added two aces. Opposite JJ Robinson totaled five points on four kills and an ace. Outsides Kelly Kinney (three kills) and Halle Thompson (two kills and an ace), and setter Genevieve Harris (one kill and two aces) each contributed three points.

The U.S. scored 12 of the first 13 points of the match and finished with a blistering .700 hitting efficiency percentage in the first set with 14 kills and no errors in 20 total attacks. Flanagan led with the way with four kills and ace for five points, and Hoecke posted four points on two kills and blocks each.

The second set was more of the same as the U.S. scored six of the first seven points and led 17-6 en route to a 2-0 lead in the match. Alevok scored six points on two kills, a block, and three aces. Flanagan tallied three points on two kills and an ace, Harris served a pair of aces and Anderson registered two kills.

Cuba held its first lead of the match early in the third set, which was tied at 16 before the U.S. scored four of the next five points to take a 20-17 lead. Cuba pulled back to within a point on two occasions, including 21-20, before the U.S finished the match on a 4-1 run. Hoecke scored four points on two kills and two aces, while Alevok and Wiest each contributed three points.
