COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 27, 2026) – The U.S. Men’s National Team completed preliminary round play at the 2026 NORCECA Final Six without a loss, defeating host Puerto Rico, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21) on Thursday night in Ponce.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in the semifinals at 5 p.m. PT.
The U.S. finished with 47 kills to 41 for Puerto Rico, but the key statistic was a 13-6 advantage in service aces. Puerto Rico held a slight edge in blocks (12-10) and made six fewer errors (33-27).
Seven players reached double digits in scoring, including four from the U.S. Outside Sean Kelly led the U.S. with 14 points on 12 kills, a block and an ace. He also led the team with six excellent receptions. Opposite Kyle Hobus totaled 13 points on seven kills, three blocks and three aces. Outside Sterling Foley served five aces for the second consecutive match to go with six kills and a block for 12 points. He led the team with seven digs.
Middle blocker Jackson Cryst rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points on seven kills, two blocks and an ace with fellow middle Parker Tomkinson finishing with seven kills and a block for eight points. Both middles scored seven points on 11 attacks and combined for a .500 hitting efficiency percentage. Outside Jacob Pasteur recorded four kills in the third set and Patrick Rogers contributed three points on two kills and an ace.
Opposite Kainoa Wade (one kill, one ace) and setter Tread Rosenthal (one block, one ace) each scored two points, setter Michael Wright scored on a kill and middle Micah Wong Diallo added a block. The U.S. used both liberos with Jacob Reilly (four excellent receptions, three digs) and Troy Gooch (four digs, two excellent receptions) combining for seven digs and six excellent receptions.
In the opening set, Foley served an ace and when next serve was passed over the net, he finished the point with a kill on a back row attack for an 8-5 U.S. lead. A Hobus kill raised the lead to four points, 10-6. Kelly caught the sideline for an ace and Foley followed with a block for a 14-9 U.S. advantage, causing a second Puerto Rico timeout. A Foley cut shot put the U.S. up 15-10 and the lead moved to six points, 17-11, on a Hobus ace. Foley came flying in from the back row for a kill and a 20-14 U.S. lead before Puerto Rico used a three-point spurt to cut the deficit in half. After a U.S. timeout, a mistimed swing extended Puerto Rico’s run to four points. Tomkinson scored to restore the three-point margin, but Puerto Rico ran off another three points to even the set at 21-21. The teams exchanged the next four points before Cryst scored on a quick and a tough Foley serve led to an out-of-system hitting error from Puerto Rico to end the set. Foley scored six points on four kills, a block and an ace, and Kelly added five points on four kills and an ace.
Puerto Rico scored the first three points of the second set. A Hobus ace cut the deficit to a point, 6-5. After a Foley kill, Kelly scored against a triple block to tie the set at seven apiece. A Puerto Rico ace capped a 4-1 run for an 11-8 lead, prompting a U.S. timeout. Rosenthal was able to set a ball from close to the net that Tomkinson finished for a kill and a Rosenthal ace on the next serve tied the set at 11-11. A Tomkinson block evened the set again at 12 and a Hobus block gave the U.S. its first lead of the set, 14-13. Cryst continued the strong net play with another ace for a 15-13 lead that sent Puerto Rico to a timeout. Puerto Rico charged right back with a block ending a three-point run for a 16-15 lead.
Down 18-16, the U.S. cut the lead in half on a Cryst kill and Foley continued his strong serving with a strong serve that led to a Kelly kill off the block and then back-to-back aces, the second catching the tape of the net for a 20-18 U.S. lead. Once again, Puerto Rico went on a 3-0 run to retake the lead. Another Kelly kill tied the score before Puerto Rico covered a Tomkinson block to score for a 22-21 advantage. The U.S. called timeout after falling behind by two on an error. Puerto Rico won the set to even the match on a miscommunication on the U.S. side on set point. Kelly recorded five kills in the set to pace the U.S.
Puerto Rico raced out to a 5-0 lead in the third set, forcing the U.S. to use an early timeout. The lead was three points, 12-9, when the U.S. took its first lead of the set with four consecutive points, starting with a pair of Tomkinson kills and ending with a Pasteur kill. Kelly kills put the U.S. up 14-13 and his back-to-back kills gave the U.S. its first two-point lead, 16-14. A Foley ace put the U.S. up 20-18, but Puerto Rico scored four of the next five points to take a 22-21 lead. After a U.S. timeout and some court maintenance furthering the stoppage, Puerto Rico served the next ball out and hit a ball out to give the U.S. a 23-22 lead. Kelly followed with a huge block to earn set point and after Puerto Rico saved one set point, Tomkinson put the U.S. ahead 2-1 in the match with his third kill of the set. Pasteur recorded four kills and Kelly totaled four points on three kills and a block.
Hobus scored off the top of the block, and a great Rogers dig on the ensuing point kept a rally alive that ended with a Wong Diallo block for a 7-4 U.S. lead in the fourth set. Hobus put down back-to-back kills for a 9-6 advantage. Foley’s fifth ace put the U.S. ahead 11-7 and forced a Puerto Rico timeout. A Hobus attack went off the block and landed in the middle of the Puerto Rico court for a 12-9 lead and Wong Diallo made a nice dig after serving that Rogers put up for a Wright kill that stretched the margin to four points. After Puerto Rico cut the deficit to one, 14-13, Cryst delivered back-to-back kills, the second set up by a great Rogers serve that forced Puerto Rico to put over a free ball, for a 16-13 lead. After a Puerto Rico timeout, Cryst scored again, this time with a block as part of a double block with Hobus. After two Puerto Rico points, Cryst pounded a ball straight down for an 18-15 advantage. A Hobus ace put the U.S. ahead 20-16. Puerto Rico, facing a triple block, hit into the net for a 22-18 U.S. lead. Hobus scored to set up match point and Rogers completed the team’s undefeated run in pool play by placing a ball perfectly over a triple block. Hobus scored seven points on four kills, two blocks and ace.
