U.S. Women's Sitting Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 10, 2022) – The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team will play for the bronze medal at the World ParaVolley World Championships after losing to Brazil in Thursday’s semifinal, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-17) in Sarajevo.

The U.S. Women (4-1) will play Slovenia (3-3) in the bronze medal match at 4:30 a.m. CT on Friday. The U.S. Women previously beat Slovenia in pool play 3-0 on Nov. 7.

The U.S. Women and Brazil were close in the statistics as the U.S. lead 10-7 in blocks and the teams were tied 4-4 in aces. Brazil finished with 39 kills while the U.S. had 31.

But the U.S. Women struggled with scoring errors, finishing with 25 while Brazil gave up 13 points on errors.

Outside hitter Monique Matthews led the U.S. scoring with 12 points on nine kills, two blocks and one ace. She also had 24 receptions: 54 percent positive.

Outside hitter Heather Erickson scored nine points on eight kills and one block. Opposite Whitney Dosty scored eight points on seven kills and one block. She also had 23 receptions: 52 percent positive.

Middle blocker Tia Edwards scored seven points on four kills, two blocks and one ace. Middle Lora Webster totaled five points on two kills, two blocks and one ace.

Libero Bethany Zummo was credited with eight receptions: 38 percent positive. Lexi Shifflett started at setter and scored on an ace.

Nicky Nieves played as a substitute and scored two points on two blocks. Emma Schieck played as a substitute and scored one point with a kill. Kaleo Kanahele Maclay also played as a substitute.

Brazil’s Janaína Petit Cunha led all scorers with 21 points.
