Tokyo Olympic Games

The Games are almost here!

The Tokyo Olympic Games are only a few months away, but our One Year Out video still shines.

The modern Olympic Games represent the pinnacle of sport. They began in 1896 in Athens, Greece, and have since grown and expanded, both in terms of participants and sports offered.

Volleyball made its first Olympic appearance in the 1964 Summer Games in Tokyo, making 2020 special with the return to the birthplace of Olympic volleyball. USA Volleyball has a legacy of competitive success at the Olympic Games in indoor and beach volleyball disciplines winning nine gold, four silver, and seven bronze medals.

Olympic Qualification and Athlete Selection Process

Finish in the top 15 of the Olympic rankings (max two per country per gender). If more than two American duos are in the top 15, only the two highest teams will compete at the Tokyo Olympics.

Olympic ranking points can be earned at FIVB World Tour events. Teams must play at least 12 FIVB events between Sept. 1, 2018, and June 15, 2020.

Should the United States NOT have two teams in the top 15 for their gender, an American duo can earn qualification by winning the 2019 FIVB World Championship, the NORCECA Continental Cup, or the FIVB World Continental Cup.
